Before i get burned, might as well put the disclaimer on the first line. Excuse above all, explain later: i am not a music expert; nor i admit i know my music as much as the next real musician. What i am though is a music fan; what i once was was a big-big-big Rivermaya fan since the yellow self-titled album in 1994. Quick rationale on that last line: Out of 48 students in our second year high school class roughly five were Rivermaya fans; the rest were Eraserheads fanboys--- you have to be there to understand how a 14-year-old defended his favorite band, which he thought was the best in the Philippines (Try telling that to 'heads supporters...) In short, i don't believe i know my music like the any expert or average music fan. What i know is i know what it's like to be a 'maya fan over the years. Over the seemingly constant band roster changes... Over the evolution of the 'maya music which i dearly love. And all that said, here's a review of Rivermaya's latest album.
Rivermaya's Buhay (2008)
Rico Blanco on steroids. Squeeze the juice up because that's what first came to mind. In rather normal terms the effort is too much of an attempt to retain the Rivermaya identity rather than create one of its own. A poorman's version of any Rivermaya album of the past, especially the Blanco-fronted years.
Just a little revisionist history; when Bamboo left Rivermaya in 1998, i pretty much gave up and gave in to the idea that my favorite band would never be the same again. That what was left behind was just a collection of musicians, which will be good but not as great in the long term as i hoped they would. (Actually, going a little further back, i never had these worries when Perf left 3-4 years earlier) i was correct on the first thought that they would never be the same again... But was wrong on the next; the 1998-2001 Rivermaya actually matched if not was even better (Don't get us started on this one for this will turn out to be another Rico vs. Bamboo debate) considering the changes that was happening to the band.
Why and how could the triumvirate of Rico, Nathan and Mark match/outdo the foursome which includes the vocal power of a Bamboo? Simple. When Bamboo left, Rico did not miss a beat and just started doing what he do best; Create music with reckless abandon, fuck-the-critics-and-forget-about-the-fans because i am here to experiment and just make MY music.
This raw passion was clearly seen on the freedom of a Nathan and a Mark; both guys clearly HAD their freedom to input their genre of music (Nathan's funk and Mark's jazz) This raw passion and very honest take on their music resulted in Rivermaya's best albums to date post-Bamboo era: It's Not Easy Being Green featuring Nerbyoso as it's carrier single (Worst song of the album by the way) and the classic Free album.
Why and how could the triumvirate of Rico, Nathan and Mark match/outdo the foursome which includes the vocal power of a Bamboo? Simple. Rico, Nathan and Mark did not try to duplicate their previous attempts rather they tried to create a sound that could be unique between the three of them and which they can call their own. Not to say they created their own genre but rather that they redefined a Rivermaya sound--- ultimately as fans, we can adapt to roster changes especially when we see what changed.
This is where my criticism of Rivermaya's new album comes in. The five new guys (Yes, including Mark unfortunately) did not attempt to make new music rather rehash what they knew as Rivermaya. Sure sure, maybe they want to respect the Rivermaya tradition and all, but where does that put you as a musician? What does that tell you about being an artist?
And if we want to get too technical here, the real Rivermaya tradition is being able to welcome change and risk it all to create a new sound--- a new identity. What is missing is the reckless abandon attitude that made Rivermaya... Well, Rivermaya.
Buhay came way, way too lifeless for that basic requirement. It's simply Rico Blanco on steroids, you might get a few good performances here or there but in the long run the real product will show itself.
Maybe i just have to listen to it another 30-40 times like i already have? Will it change a thing? What happens to MY band now; is it still MY band? Well, like a good old Rivermaya fan, i'll probably just hang around and see what happens with this Rivermaya. Who knows, i might even watch a live performance and maybe that could change a thing... or could make the criticism even worse.)
After all, we 'maya fans know the word, "change."
Until then i delay my personal wish for the band to drop the name, Rivermaya because where's justice in using the name if you are just squeezing up the juice?

Thanks for the review. Quite an intersting unique point of view you got there :P
Seeing that your such a die-hard fan of my former bandmate, don't worry his superiffic-solo album will be out june or july. Everybody happy? yeah. :)
opinions welcome?
it might SEEM that Rivermaya did not do reckless abandon on Buhay...i'm not a music techie, i'm a chorale singer and i don't have all 'maya albums...so i'm a novice.
i believe Rivermaya still stuck with the tradition of welcoming change, though. instead of having just one, they have 4 vocalists now (i wonder who's your fifth guy...). the guys are not constrained to the instruments they were known to play...Mark does guitars, Mike-keyboards...Japs doing drum samples. i don't think this is a pathetic attempt to regain themselves and come-out as the better Rivermaya lineup as some would see it. the guys have more freedom to experiment with their craft, showcase their songwriting...have you noticed how different Buhay songs are from each other? you can almost tell who wrote what.
Buhay songs might come a tad too emotional (or lifeless/lacking vibrancy/noise) compared with previous singles/songs/albums that they've released... there are deeper sub-texts to most of the songs, oftentimes recognizable only by those who have the idea of what the band has gone through...
i believe Buhay (as well as EP Bagong Liwanag) put "fuck-the-critics-and -forget-about-the-fans" on a low... the album even seem to have had fans a top consideration... Rivermaya is trying to impart that the true Banda ng Bayan is us...i guess that takes out "forget-about-the-fans". but "fuck-the-critics" is still there, otherwise they could've disbanded altogether...
Buhay might have appeared to duplicate some of the band's previous attempts but this might have come out as a result as per the context Buhay was compiled to start with--life experiences--which is actually one thing all people share.
reckless abandon the best! i see it as the height of all art as well. but there's more to art/artistry/musicality than reckless abandon...i guess with Buhay they just tried to 'experiment' with the other side of art's wide range.
(I like your blog. It's well worth the read. :p )
your review tried too hard to impress it's readers. to no avail. a review is a review and unless you point out evidence behind your judgement then it's senseless. you are a good writer though. it might be worthwhile to look around here and see what other things you can write about.

Which bandmate? ;) Perf?:D (There, i assumed you're Mark E.)
Let me emphasize the fact i am a 'maya fan before i became a Bamboo fan (And most probably Rico when he releases that album)... That said, i can compare my fanaticism to 'maya with my passion for my sports teams--- i try to follow (former) players who were part of the team but was one way or the other removed from the squad; at the same time i still follow the (ex) teams even though certain favorite players left that squad.
It doesn't matter if they are good or bad but of course, i'd be inclined to show more support for the better performing players...

Where and which part did i try to impress?
What i tried to impress was simple; i am one disappointed 'maya fan.
a review is a review and unless you point out evidence behind your judgement then it's senseless.
i felt it was a bit too emotional--- and i don't know how much sense you can put on that one when emotions are involved. i will not disagree with you that i lacked to point out proofs other than the fact that i listened to the album.
But i emphasize, this is just a fan speaking as a fan. i did consider being technical about it and review/criticize PER song. But thought better it, as i can't pretend to be better musician than these guys.
you are a good writer though. it might be worthwhile to look around here and see what other things you can write about.
Thank you.
First off, thanks for the rather long comment, really appreciate it.

My bad, i should have put four instead of five.

i can understand that part. But the way i see it this new band is still searching for its identity. So much so that it reflects on their output; it lacks a personality that makes you say, "ah that's the new rivermaya. i know its them but there's something different i can't quite put my finger on it." Even more so, "ah, that's the new song? Nice. It's rivermaya with a little bit of twist."
Personally, i did not have that reaction when i first listened to it. Maybe its the innate spoiled fan in me because well, to be blunt about it i have seen better days that i expect a better product. Maybe my personal expectations were too high. And i don't think that's a bad idea at all.

Yes, most of the songs were rather plain--- but even simplicity could work! i thought that's why the song "Sleep" worked on it's own acoustic approach because even in its plainness/simplicity, you felt the honesty of the song which makes it a very effective piece.

Sadly so. Here's an interesting take on this one. Rico once said in an interview (in the wake of Perf departure i believe): "We play want we want to play, kahit na baduy."
Now there's two ways to take that; either Rico was wanting not to please the critics or was wanting not please the fans. But there's a third point which was what Rico really wanted to say (and did, end result was the Trip album): fuck-you-all we are making our music. Hope you like it.
However, it was also Rico who introduced this "Banda ng Bayan" mentality to the group, an attitude which says that this band is "for the people, by the people"... So much so that i believe that rivermaya became too poppish for comfort. Rico is part of the blame of what i see as a sad change, and the new members just picked up where he left off...
reckless abandon the best! i see it as the height of all art as well. but there's more to art/artistry/musicality than reckless abandon...i guess with Buhay they just tried to 'experiment' with the other side of art's wide range.
Well as i've said, i thought they did not experiment or explore much but then again, that could just be me. What i know is i feel i will stick around for a while and wait out and see what happens to the new rivermaya music. What i am hoping is that i remain a rivermaya fan, and their music will decide that.
